You are right about mixing different RAM modules — if there’s one thing you absolutely can’t mix, it’s DDR with DDR2, or DDR2 with DDR3 and so on (they won’t even fit in the same slots). I have 4 DIMM slots - I also have two pairs of RAM sticks - 2 4GB and 2 8 GB - For the sake of discussion, if i wanted to fill all the slots with these ram sticks, would there be a certain order to put them in? Like pairs alternating? In my HP tower, the four DIMM slots are blue and black. What Nightgloom and Halym said. First user manual and check how slots are described. There you should also have a quick guide on how to plug RAM. General rule: 1. Slots are A1-A2 B1-B2 2. With two same type RAM you plug A1-B1 / A2-B2 slots. The pic Nightgloom provided explains it perfectly. Does the RAM slot order matter? It can, but it depends on the motherboard. Some motherboards require you to use specific slots depending upon how many ram cards you have. In general, however, 1 card by itself can go anywhere. I, by default, always put two DIMMs into the first two slots closest to the CPU. At least back in the DDR(1) days, that was the way to do it. But apparently, you have to put the RAM into slots 1 and 3, if you only have two sticks, in order to activate dual-channel mode.SodapopActive MemberJoinedJun 12, 2012Messages184Lightroom Experience Intermediate Does Ram Slot MatterDoes it matter which slot you put an additional RAM card in?I recently upgraded the RAM in my computer. It contained two cards in slots 1 and 3 (Or 2 and 4 depending from which side you count). This left me with two slots to add more RAM. One slot was between the two occupied ones and one on the end. I put a new 8 g card in the end or open slot as it was easier to do than putting it between the two cards that were already in there. Computer was been acting weird lately and I wonder if the new card should have gone in between the two cards that came with the computer. The computer is a HP Pavilion 500-054 DesktopThe Memory card was recommended by Crucial
